Hawaiian style Kalua Pork in the Slow Cooker

This recipe yields the most delicious pork for nearly zero effort - as long as you give yourself enough lead time for the slow cooking process. Per wikipedia the word Kalua refers to an underground oven, so feel free to put your slow cooker underground, if that is an option.

Ingredients

  • Pork Shoulder - 3 to 4 lbs
  • Salt
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Olive or Coconut Oil

Directions

  1. Before adding the pork, apply your olive or coconut oil to the inside of your slow cooker. Add generous amounts of salt to bottom of your slow cooker.
  2. Add the pork shoulder to the slow cooker, and turn it over a few times to cover it with the salt you added to the basin. Add more salt as you see fit.
  3. Add a bunch of liquid smoke.
  4. Cook on low for 16 hours. After roughly 12 hours of cooking, open the lid and shred the pork with a fork.
  5. Add more salt / liquid smoke to taste.
